Extreme carbon offsetting
The North Face® is offsetting the carbon cost of its epic expeditions to some of the most remote and inhospitable locations on planet earth.
Extreme expeditions led by elite athletes are hardwired in The North Face® brand DNA. Culturally, they define the brand; practically, they’re an important way to test gear, performance, and safety in the harshest conditions.
The North Face has always worked to protect the places it explores. To take its climate action journey to the next level, The North Face® is now committed to offset carbon emissions from all its athlete expeditions.
Figuring out how to measure the footprint of these far-from routine trips has been a challenge. With the methodology and technology required simply not existing, The North Face created a calculator, capable of factoring in everything from helicopter and snow cat trips to the relative carbon cost of meat and vegetarian meals.
The carbon calculated for every expedition is offset through a partnership with The Conservation Fund, and the carbon costs The North Face® pays will fund reforestation at the Marias Des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge in Kansas, USA.
Carbon offsetting isn’t new to The North Face®. Since 2007, it has used renewable energy and purchased offsets to address emissions from all its owned and operated facilities in the U.S., as well as business travel, employee commuting, and e-commerce shipping.
